The year 1938 found the world reeling from the impact of what is now known as the Great Depression. Around the world, weakened governments succumbed to nationalist movements that held forth dreams of empire. Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, and Stalin had begun their epics of ruthless aggression. Here in the United States economic depression and prohibition of alcohol led enterprising men to find "creative" means to make a living. A.C. Dispanet was just such a man. His activities during the Great Depression are now the stuff of local legend.
What is fact, however, is that in the dark days of 1938 A.C. Dispanet opened the Magnolia Bar. The Magnolia Bar and Steak House soon became known throughout the upper Midwest for its food, drink, and congenial atmosphere. A.C., also known as "Claire", became known for his generosity and appreciation of loyalty. His legacy has endured for three generations through his son and grandchildren.
In 1972 A.C.'s son Tim and his wife, Susan, became the new owners. With this new generation came new collections of steins, liquor decanters, and a need for a more modern facility. The new Magnolia Steak House was built across the street just west of the original and opened to rave reviews in June of 1979. The original menu, many faithful employees, and a hungry community brought continued success.
Fire is the bane of the restaurant business, and the Magnolia Steak House has endured two such catastrophes. The first fire occurred on January 3, 1988, thus resulting in a new location south of Luverne. The second fire on March 19, 2002, determined to have been started by an outside neon light, occurred just a year after A.C.'s granddaughter Amy and her husband Brad took over the Magnolia Steak House and Bar. The tradition lives on however, thanks to a community that loves a good steak, and a family determined to continue what A.C. Dispanet began during the uncertain days of the Great Depression.
Remaining dedicated to its tradition of fine, yet congenial dining, The Magnolia Steak House and Bar is again open to you, your family and friends. We continue to boast a fully stocked bar, as well as a menu that features excellent on premise custom-aged hand-cut steaks, seafood, and specialty dishes. So come as you are from the field, shop, road, or home. Bring your appetite and thirst; for we live on to serve you: the generations of families we have grown to know and love over all these years.
Thank you for joining us tonight...
